Have you invested your blood, sweat, and tears into your career and ticked off many financial and hierarchical goals – only to find yourself still single and struggling to find your ideal partner? Are you wondering where you’re going wrong? Perhaps you’re constantly meeting new people through work and networking, and have been on multiple blind dates (or perhaps you’ve been lucky to dodge that bullet, despite many attempts by family and friends). But while piles of wedding invitations flood your desk, you find yourself left to source someone to be your ‘plus one’. And you ask yourself – ‘Why am I still single?’ Well, you’re not alone. Why am I still single? Successful people often expect to see their own hard-won attributes and values reflected in their ideal partner. They seek out personal development and are more educated and socially experienced and as a result, can more easily identify any red flags in someone’s character that could potentially hinder the relationship they ultimately want. Some consider them fussy but they are just being responsible to themselves and others. Successful people are already busy engaging with the world around them on so many levels, whether it’s related to work, community, or charity contributions.

And you ask yourself – ‘Why am I still single?’

Well, you’re not alone.

Therefore, they don’t have much time leftover to head to bars or clubs to find a partner. You might see it as a waste of time when you could be relaxing on your couch at home with a glass of Pinot Gris.

Successful people often mix socially with their equals, but their equals are not necessarily single. (And these could be your blind date organisers!)

All these aspects conspire to make it seem impossible for successful people to meet their match.

However, Australia’s leading matchmaker, Trudy Gilbert, says people need to remind themselves that new relationships need exploration time. It’s not necessarily something that’s going to happen overnight – or at first sight.

“There’s a fallacy that new intimacy should be comfortable, if not magical, and it can be,” says Trudy. “But it can also be scary, uncomfortable, and create all sorts of feelings that unearth sleepless nights of past sadness and anger.”

And that’s okay – it’s all part of the relationship ride. There will be highs and there will be lows, but if you don’t give it a real shot, then you might miss out on uncovering the partnership’s true potential.

“Many people worry about getting in too deep and not being able to change their mind,” adds Trudy. “Without committing yourself to giving it a go, you will never know. Remember, you are always in the driver’s seat in your life and you can always change anything at any given moment. Don’t be scared to go all in, just because you think you can’t get out!”

So if you had a great evening with someone new and ended up spending the night, try to resist the panicked urge to dress in record time and head back down the highway to Singletown. Even if your mindset is a bit different the next day, remember there’s a reason you enjoyed yourself the night before. (Even if alcohol had a role to play!)

Try to stay with those feelings of the previous evening and open yourself up to the potential of new love.

“It’s not always a comfortable feeling at first,” adds Trudy. “It’s more often a crazy feeling! But trust me; it will be worth the ride to find trust and love.”

Talking sounds like an easy thing. It is. Communication is different. It’s a conversation between two people from a start to an end with a clear premise in between. It doesn’t just happen, good communication takes effort and finesse. When you’re aiming to communicate something to your staff or your boss, usually, you plan through it — you analyze different approaches, different perceptions and different outcomes. The same needs to stand true for dating. If there’s something you need to discuss, take the time to think about the best way to style the approach the situation. Here are a few tips worth considering the next time you and your partner need to have a chat or a simple convo over life.

USE DIPLOMACY. When stress ensues, aim to stay grounded even though you have a stand to talk. Communication is often negotiation, so always keep that in mind before you come blazing in stomping a foot.

DON’T GO DIGITAL. Communication via email or text is OK for a means to an end, but it isn’t proper for important conversations to be exchanged digitally. You wouldn’t fire someone at work via a text message, so pay the same respect to your partners. If you have something important to say — something that’s important to you — make time to have an in person discussion.

RESPECT DIFFERENCES. If you’re bringing something up that you know your partner doesn’t believe in or respect, approach with caution. Be courteous of their beliefs and opinions, you’ll be more likely to get a point across if you are.

SHOW FEEDBACK. When someone in the office is explaining something to you, you’ll let him or her know you’re listening by commenting or repeating back. This definitely needs to be considered in regards to speaking with your loved ones. There’s nothing worse than a one-sided conversation in a relationship, so don’t just listen — let them know you’re listening.

CONSIDER YOUR EMOTIONS. It simply isn’t OK to constantly break down in tears behind your desk. By letting your emotions take too much control, you’ll miss out on finding a means to figure out the situation that’s making you upset. When you’re speaking with your special someone, and you feel yourself getting emotional, it’s acceptable — but to a degree. Try to keep your brain focused on the matter at hand, rather than loosing control.

No matter what, you should always have a few quotes to live by on hand. Everyone needs a good mantra now and then, right? When things get stressful, it always comforts to enter words of wisdom into your thoughts. Remembering such ideas or notions, sometimes from centuries past and sometimes from the present, helps in clearing your brain of those pesky clouds…Twisting your kaleidoscope on life. As you’ve probably learned from my previous posts, I always find a healthy way to approach dating is similar to the mindset you apply when working a successful business. It’s all about perspective! Once you realize that, you’re on your way. Still, things can get hard. Finding success in love is one of the hardest roads you will take — and it’s a long one! So always remember to take breaths along the way, and when you need, have a quote that reinforces positivity. Keep such a quote in the back of your mind and always pull it out when you need it. Here a few quotes to live by that will keep your mind straight for both your personal and professional life. “I am thankful for all of those who said NO to me. Its because of them I’m doing it myself.” – Albert Einstein “The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle.” – Steve Jobs “Build your own dreams, or someone else will hire you to build…

When you’re a busy professional, it’s hard to find proper amounts of time for sleeping, let alone romance! However, no matter how busy you might be, romance is essential to your livelihood — and of course, the future of your relationship (or potential relationship). You can’t expect a plant to grow if you don’t water it, right? Apologies for the obvious metaphor, but you’d be surprised how often people forget to remember that a relationship simply cannot run on the same fumes forever. Just like in business, you have to strive forward, focus your attention and overcome setbacks to succeed. Here at 7 ways of keeping your relationship ascending with happiness, even when your calendar is jam-packed. Sometimes, yes… It’s the little things that matter. Bottom line: Always remember the romance in your busy schedule! DO SOMETHING ROMANTIC, JUST BECAUSE. It doesn’t have to be a holiday, anniversary or special occasion to spice things up with a surprise to your significant other. Bring home some flowers? Pick up your partner’s favorite dessert? Sneak a note into their bag in the morning when they aren’t looking? Romance can be easily achieved with subtle gestures of affection. PLAN DATE NIGHTS. When you’re busy, it’s all about planning.

If you can plan out a year’s worth of business, then you better believe you are on the hook when it comes to planning a nice date night. Pick an evening and a place, stick with it and enjoy your time. Leave the office at your desk. Date nights are essential, be it a new relationship or old, so never go too long without that special time with your special someone.

COMPLIMENTS. If your partner looks nice (and really think it) let them know! With that, you also have to take a breath and be in the presence of your partner — even when you’re on your way out the door. You know the situation where a girl gets a haircut and her husband doesn’t even notice? Don’t be that person. Pay attention.

PILLOW TALK. Couples who go to sleep together are more likely to be happy than those who don’t. Why? Because that time, at night, when everything is finished and you’re zoning out for a good snooze, it’s the perfect time to catch up with your partner on how their day was and what their thoughts have been revolving around. It’s a quiet, reflecting time and keeps a nice line of communication open between couples.

FIND A REGULAR HOBBY. TOGETHER. Get into something with partner, be it a project, a sport’s team or a TV show — find something you both enjoy that you can follow on a regular basis, together. If you’re into footie, and you both love a team, watch the games together. If you love drama, find an amazing TV show that you both simply cannot miss. It’s a short amount of time, but it’s all about bonding and keeping the friendship aspect of your relationship thriving is sure to add fire to the romance spectrum.

KISSES AND HUGS. If you’re late to work or simply busting to finish some paperwork late at night, still, always take a moment for a goodbye or hello kiss. It takes five seconds, but it’s a gentle and amazing reminder of warmth.

BREAKFAST. Successful people are notorious for rising early and eating a great breakfast. It’s a peaceful time of reflection. If you’re in a relationship, share this time of the day with your partner. Take a moment and break the morning’s bread together, discuss whatever is in the paper and then put your power face on and get to work.

Habitual routines are a means of maintaining a desired lifestyle. What do you do everyday, without much consideration, that drives you towards the future you’ve set for yourself? Maybe it’s that extra glass of water in the morning after your coffee? Or, maybe you can’t function without your sunrise jog. Whatever it is, make sure it’s doing you for the good! Habits are hard to break, thus it’s best to develop the most productive habits possible. Be it for work or for your personal life, such routine activities are sure to affect the way you approach your life. Here are a few common habits of successful people — in love and business — to thrive off of.

WAKE UP EARLY. The morning is such a refreshing, brain-free time. It’s noted that some of the most successful people wake up around 4 a.m. What do they do? They start the day fresh. They eat a healthy breakfast, maybe squeeze in a workout, and spend some extra time with their loved ones.

KEEP YOUR WORD. No matter what, people who keep their promises will thrive over those who don’t. Even when it seems out-of-the-way, ensure that you do what you say. This particularly transcends work to the dating world. A key factor to being able to keep your word, is being able to efficiently organize your schedule.

BRAND YOURSELF. Successful people have charisma, most of the time. It might not be seen on public TV, but it’s there somewhere. Know how to tell your story. Know what you’re putting out into the world, and excel on your positive traits. It builds yourself as a brand, which allows space and comfort for you to develop followers. The same stands with dating, so put on your charm and always bring your smiling facets forward.

BE A TRUE LEADER, NOT A BOSSY PANTS. Allow others to feel excited under your leadership, and do this by allowing them to feel as if they are part of the team working towards a goal — no just someone working towards your goals. The same stands in a relationship. People with true love don’t dictate towards each other, they work together to achieve common goals.

DON’T SHY FROM YOUR MISTAKES. Everyone makes them. Google makes mistakes every day! But look where they are! Admit to your mishaps, learn from them and move on. Holding onto the past will only hold you in the water.

ASK QUESTIONS. People who express themselves and their concerns have the ability to assess and move on. Those who hold back, don’t ask questions and go through life blindfolded will have a harder time sorting through their paths. Always ask when you need! Always.

HONESTY. Honesty is the best policy. Sure, a white lie is OK, “Yes! I love that tie.” But keeping truth from the surface or hiding things behind others best interests is detrimental.

KNOW WHEN TO TAKE A BREATHER. Successful people know when the water is boiled and it’s time for a cool down, avoiding a spill over the pot. You can loose everything if you let things boil too much. Know when it’s time for space, when it’s time to step back and when you just need a break.

A matchmaker is really a consultant for your dating life, here’s why. Why would you hire a business consultant? Better yet, what is the purpose of a business consultant? Well, they provide management consulting to help companies increase their performance and efficiency ratings. As professionals, they know how to analyze a business and generate valuable solutions that enrich a brand’s ability to meet their goals. As a business owner, you hire a consultant in order to gain some outside perspective, allowing you more ability to follow your desired plans. The key factor here is “outside perspective.” A matchmaker is a true source of outside perspective. If things weren’t going to plan, why would you sit around continuously failing at trying to figure it out? You wouldn’t. Your business would plummet. In the dating scene, things might not always be going your way. The thing is, not everyone makes the right decisions when it comes to dating (this seems obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people actually don’t consider that they might just be going down the wrong road, or that it’s their dating habits that are ruining it for themselves). Being happy in your personal life should always be a priority, so don’t underestimate the power of a matchmaker. Here’s how the two go hand-in-hand:

EXPERTISE IN A SPECIFIC MARKET. A matchmaker knows what they’re doing! Such as Trudy Gilbert, of Elite Matchmaker, they’ve been working for years and have matched hundreds of couples. They’re able to come in with background information you aren’t able to gather on your own.

IDENTIFY PROBLEMS. You might not know it, but some of your dating habits might be causing you to come off the wrong way, thus leaving you single. A matchmaker analyzes your current situation and targets weak areas, while providing advice to strengthen and sort out any problems that might be holding you back.

GET THE BALL ROLLING ON CHANGE. A matchmaker helps you sort out your aforementioned “problems” by pointing you in the right direction. They teach you compromise, so you can gain a healthy perspective on future dating.

THEY DO THE “DIRTY WORK.” While a business consultant will come in and rid a company of unneeded staff, a matchmaker will sort through all the singles for you — saving you time from shifting through potential partners, or also, going on dates with those lacking compatibility.

So, to get your thoughts lining up correctly, here are a few ideal ways in which the methods you use to run a business would come in handy when you’re managing your relationship.

ATTENTION TO DETAIL. In business, if you skip over something, you could be out major dollars. So, in order to avoid this, we tend to be super attentive to the little things. Well… love is a business, folks. If you keep missing out on subtle hints, it could cause some serious issues down the road. Pay attention. Listen carefully. The little things matter!

REVIEWING. The workplace is a wonderful place for regular overviews, right? Essentially, this is because you want to make sure participates, outside influences and economical influences are making sense and building towards future growth and sustainability. In the dating world, the same is true. Take time to sit back and go over everything. Analyze how things such as distance, schedules, personality traits and life goals are impacting the growth of the relationship. If you see it working out, move forward whole-heartedly, or if it’s just not adding up, consider your options.

SYNERGY. When you’re in business, it’s all about keeping up with synergy; the interaction of two efforts that result in the greater return than the sum of the two. When you’re dating, you and your partner should compliment each others course in life. Together, you create positive feelings of productiveness.

HIRING. When you have a job opening and you begin the interviewing process, you wouldn’t hire someone because they seemed pleasant and entertaining, but at the end of the day, didn’t know a thing about their job. The same goes for dating, you might find someone attractive, but your interaction lacks hints of depth, you shouldn’t sign them up for the job. In that case, move on. Date people you see potential with, who fit the description for what you’re looking for in your life.

MAINTAINING AN ECOSYSTEM. When you’re in a relationship, you have to keep everything flowing. You go on dates and adventures, while getting to know not only each other, but each others extended lives as well. Everything comes down to the two of you. In business, the ecosystem is the entirety of all the systems, working separately — but together — towards the future. Combining two lives together is rather similar.

KPI. In the workplace, you have to monitor if you’re reaching your goals. Although a relationship isn’t cut and dry, down to the numbers, it is a means of moving forward in life. Therefore, you should assess your goals in a way that checks if what you’re putting in is showing its return.

In a light-hearted, yet seemingly appropriate manner, SEOmoz CEO, Rand Fishkin, declares a look at the comparisons between raising venture capital and dating. Yes, it’s charming. Who knew the two scenes theoretically collided? When this live essay first launched, SEOmoz was rounding out of their first round of VC funding as a profitable and growing company. At this time, the business was seeking round B, allowing the brand to feel the changes of company size, the likes of changing marketing angles and the act of embracing a new table of interested investors. SEOmoz: 10 Disturbing Similarities Between Dating & Raising Capital from SEOmoz on Vimeo. So, what is the VC process all about when it comes to small businesses? Well SEOmoz would know, of course. In this video, Fishkin gives viewers a great insight to the world of capital raising, and while he does it, we get a bit draw dropped with amusement as he uses dating for his primary analogy. A few key points we picked up from the video above: First off, raising VC causes you to think an incredible amount about your own business. When you go out dating, it’s pretty natural to start dissecting yourself. Just as in VC raising, you should always pull out your best assets and strengthen your weaker ones before you start pitching to serious potential. In terms of levels of hotness, if you’re dating someone that’s “hotter” than you, or ranks higher…

Just as in VC raising, you should always pull out your best assets and strengthen your weaker ones before you start pitching to serious potential.

In terms of levels of hotness, if you’re dating someone that’s “hotter” than you, or ranks higher than you in terms of looks, but yet they’re still spending a lot of time by your side, they’re probably interested. A VC’s time is worth more than someone who is looking for capital, thus, if a VC is spending more time with you, they have developed curiosity. The same stands true for dating… Even when it feels like a long shot, if the other person keeps reaching out and/or responding, there’s got to be some levels of interest.

Social media. If you’re dating someone that you see as serious potential, but you haven’t put all your eggs in one basket just yet, don’t “tweet flirt” between prospects online. You can loose your investor, as he sees you’ve taken a liking to all his competition and/or you appear unreliable. Thus, you can also loose someone you really like, as it isn’t really polite to flaunt everything you have going on when you’ve entered into a possibility with someone else.

The striking similarities between Entrepreneurship and Dating.

Entrepreneurship is defined as: “the process of starting a business or other organization. The entrepreneur develops a business model, acquires the human and other required resources, and is fully responsible for its success or failure.” Dating is defined as: “a part of human mating process whereby two people meet socially for companionship, beyond the level of friendship, or with the aim of each assessing the others’ suitability as a partner in an intimate relationship or marriage.” The key factor here is that of “each to his or her own,” in both aspects of entrepreneurship and dating — career or personal — you’re responsible for the success or plummet of a progressive, fulfilled future.

Even by definition, the two terms go hand-in-hand. In both standings of the professional mindset and that of someone participating in the search for love, the approach to good entrepreneurship and a healthy dating perspective rein similarities.

COMMITMENT. Be it starting a new business or venturing into a relationship, commitment is essential. Such new “projects” (for lack of a better word), require focus, attention and flexibility. If you a mistake in business, you commit yourself to figuring things out and going from there, so should be true when it comes to dating.

MARKETING YOURSELF AND PRESENTING POSITIVE ATTRIBUTES. Being good with entrepreneurship is all about putting your best foot forward. When you sell an idea, you sell yourself. It’s an age-old business tactic. The same stands true with love. When you meet someone, present your best qualities. Don’t go into it loathing over insecurities, no one will want to invest in something/someone that seems on the downwind. Show potential for future growth!

KNOW YOUR MARKET GOALS. In a business plan, you mark out your thoughts and desires for years in advance, and then you take action to reach those check points. If you’re looking for love, know what you want and seek that out. It doesn’t benefit anyone wasting time on someone you know isn’t suitable for your long-term goals.

NETWORKING. Get out there! Meet people! Connections do wonders. It’s all about putting yourself out there and seeing what comes back to you in return. You attend business-coordinated events on a regular basis, so when it comes to love, do the same. Seek out some options such as dinner parties with friends who bring new friends, dating events, online dating sites, etc.

ASKING FOR HELP. When in the weeds of uncertainty, asking for help is a fundamental business stone. Same stands for romance. Talk to your friends, hire a matchmaker (such as Elite’s Trudy Gilbert), read some helpful books — not everyone is good at dating. If you’re having trouble, maybe you just need a little squeak to clean things up.

BEING WARY OF POTENTIAL FUTURE PROBLEMS. Forecasting future issues in business means being ready for what lay ahead and planning thoughts/ideas for such circumstances. When it comes to dating, for instance, if you become romantically involved in someone that might have to move to London in a year, make sure you consider such aspects into your current relationship. Keeping such long-term thoughts in mind will help you thrive over the present, easing into your future together — thus, limiting shocks that could otherwise be crucial.

ACCEPTING REJECTION. In business, doors are bound to slam in your face. No successful entrepreneur has avoided hearing the word “NO” over and over again. Keep this in mind when you approach dating. You’re looking for love, maybe a relationship for a lifetime. What are a few rejections along the way?

COMMUNICATION. Keep your thoughts clear. You wouldn’t ignore your clients or steer them in the wrong direction, they would pull out of business without a second thought! Don’t confuse love to be any different. Communication is the forefront of any positive relationship, be it professional or personal.

THE METHODS OF SELLING YOURSELF FROM BUSINESS TO DATING Let’s be honest, when you’re hard at work with your next big business break, you have to work hard to sell yourself. You might have the winning idea, but if the people upstairs don’t believe in you, you’ll be hard-pressed to get very far. Lately, it seems as if we are opted to constantly sell ourselves, especially online… We sit down at our laptops, and then we create a business profile, listing all our achievements and knowledge — and then — we move onto our dating profile, and it all begins again. It actually seems like an endless cycle of selling, no? The worst part of such a method is that, we can be rejected without even meeting in person! Still, if you approach the situation properly, you’ll have the best chances at selling yourself — of course, always putting your best foot forward. Here are our top methods for selling yourself from business to dating: AUTHENTICITY. Don’t try to portray yourself as better than you are, you’re already great. If you haven’t worked with a client in years, don’t put them on the top of your resume. If you’ve gained 10 pounds in the last year, use the recent photograph. CONVERSATIONAL. Being good at convo, even good at writing clearly, will get you a long ways. Be yourself! Use colorful language when you can. BE HONEST. Talk about what you really truly want. Let the person interviewing you understand that…

Still, if you approach the situation properly, you’ll have the best chances at selling yourself — of course, always putting your best foot forward. Here are our top methods for selling yourself from business to dating:

AUTHENTICITY.

Let the person interviewing you understand that the job, even if you’re under qualified, honestly fits your expectations. The same with dating.

BE EXCITED ABOUT YOURSELF. If you’re not thrilled with your life, why should someone else be?

BRAG ABOUT YOUR PERK You’re good at something?Bring it forward! Let people know the advantages of you over others. Selling yourself is no time to be humble. Be proud.
